The following are the most common refractive vision conditions. You may have a combination of these conditions. Fortunately, most of them can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery in most cases.
Nearsightedness or myopia
- Eye focusing power too strong
- Blurry distance vision
- Clear near vision
- Usually occur after the age of 6
Farsightedness or hyperopia
- Eye focusing power too weak
- May experience headache and eyestrain
- Clear to moderate distance vision, but eyes have to over work
- Blurry to moderate near vision, but eyes again have to over work
- Common in children and is often missed in “vision screenings”
Astigmatism
- Blurry distance and near vision
- May experience headache or eyestrain
- Caused by irregular or oval shaped cornea or crystalline lens
- Occur at any age
Presbyopia
- Blurry near vision
- Caused by loss of focusing ability resulting from normal aging process
- Sometimes experience headache or eyestrain
- Usually occur after the age of 40
